Fast Track part 5
Ponov woke up Brick, they were both surprised and delighted to see Pho.
“How’d you get here, and who gave you a card?” they asked.
“It’s a story, I’ll tell you, but let me sit down first, I’m in a lot of pain, a person in my condition should not be moving around much at all”, she said.
Pho sat down, her head was spinning. The past few hours had been an adventure, not so much fun at the time, but a nice one to tell.
Brick brought her a cup of water in a crystal goblet. The water was sparkling clear, it looked like the cleanest water Pho had ever seen.
“There are cubes of ice in it, there’s an ice dispenser on the door of the cooling machine.” Brick told her.
“An ice making machine?” exclaimed Pho, “After I’m rested, we’re going to have a look around this weird huge ship, can’t wait to discover more of these mind boggling creations.”
Ponov and Brick sat down, enjoying the resplendent cushioned furniture.
Pho twirled her hair. Then she began to speak.
“After you guys left me in the box, I was squashed in there, the air was hot and the crate was stuffy. I fell asleep, only to be awakened some time later, when a crate near me was being moved by two trolls.
Lucky me, a few minutes later, they grabbed my box, and started moving towards the ship.
It was getting very hot in there, the air was becoming almost impossible to breathe; the few airholes were lifesavers. The lack of air bothered me the most, even more than the pains I had in my chest.
They had to wait on a line, because one crewman’s cargo was being checked. “Just Dense’s luck to get stopped” said one troll to the other. “I hate the security teams here, they make you clean up after they mess your boxes. They love making us feel like they own the place and we’re lucky to have a job”.
The Trolls advanced, and as they were passing the guards they were stopped.
My heart pounded, a slight chill went down my spine, if they found me I could be thrown overboard, killed, or who knows what. FAST doesn’t have a record of being nice, the letter I received was intimidating. Yet, I still decided to attend; just like everybody else, the endless possibilities of the unknown draw people in.
“How’re you doing today, Coal”, a guard asked one of the Trolls. I was sure the next thing that they would do is ask to open the box.
“Great”, Coal answered.
“Will I see you soon in the cafeteria for a game of Scaboo”? The Guard asked.
“Sure, I’m finishing my shift in ten minutes, see you then”, answered Coal.
To my relief the Trolls weren’t stopped again, until they set me down a few floors below the entrance.
“Let’s head to the cafeteria” they announced as they left.
I couldn’t take the heat any longer, so I risked it, and knocked on the box until the lid came off. I was surrounded by boxes, the room was pretty big and there were only a few spaces that boxes weren’t occupying. I quickly closed the box, and moved through the room. It wasn’t long till I found the door.
I looked outside with a quick glimpse, and after being sure the hallway was empty I stepped outside. It was a very long corridor; there weren’t nearly as many doors as there are on this floor. There was no place to hide, and my wounds were aching. Luckily most of them are hidden.
I walked until I reached an opening, two people had just gotten out; they were heading the other way and didn’t seem to notice me.
I walked in and I was surrounded by mirrors, there was no pathway through. Before I could decide what to do next, the doors closed. I wanted to walk back out, but the room started to ascend. I had no idea what to do, helpless I waited. The doors opened up, and it looked like I’d made it to the main deck. I stepped out; amazed by my surroundings, things I’ve never seen were staring back at me.
I walked towards the receptionist, a tall figured lady, who was standing behind the desk. “What’s your name and from what town are you”, she asked me.
I gave her my details, and after a minute of looking, she found my info. “It says here that you were accepted, but there’s no record of your boarding. Stay here for a moment, while I go yell at some idiots”. Five minutes later she was back, some guard walking like a scolded child behind her.
“Where did you go” Asked the guard, his eyes begging me not to betray him. “I was about to take you to a counselor and you just walk away? When I say follow, I mean until I tell you to stop”.
“Ok, sorry”, I said, “I just got a bit lost and walked here”.
“It better not happen again”, the lady told him. Then she turned to me.
“When you’re done with the counselor, come back to me”, she said.
The guard led me to some door. After he made sure that nobody could hear, he said to me. “I’m sure you didn’t board this ship during my shift. If they find out I lied, I don’t know what they’ll do to me. It’s nice to meet you, however you got on. My name’s Vasc”.
He walked into the room and after a few moments told me to go in.
The lady in there was cold like an icicle; I figured I’d be best off keeping my mouth shut for now. After she finished her speech about how things are, will be, and how much they really care about any of us, she let me go.
I walked back to the receptionist and said hi. She stood up, gave me a booklet and a card, which she said would open my room. She leaned close and said to me in a voice so low that I could barely hear her, “I know that you didn’t get on the normal way; there are eyes everywhere, if you want to stay safe and make it to FAST, do what you’re told and don’t ask too many questions. Trust me, I’m a friend; if you need anything just ask for Filos, and I’ll get to you as soon as I can”.
I said thank you and I walked to the Mirror room to get upstairs. I figured if it got me to this floor, it can get me to the deck I needed.
There was this annoying Honibee at the elevator. That’s the name he gave for it, annoyed that the new students keep asking questions about how it works. As I was waiting, I heard many crazy ideas. The room has magic wings; Trolls pull strings up and down, and many more suggestions. I just waited silently, not wanting to draw attention to myself.
Finally I got in and arrived at this floor. After walking for a bit I made it here.”
“Well, all’s well that ends well”, said Brick.
“I honestly thought your wounds were far worse”, said Ponov.
“My body is hurting”, she replied, “but like my mother used to tell me, for the amount of trouble you get yourself into, Pho, you’re lucky you heal fast. If I didn’t heal fast, I’d probably be dead by now”.
“Let me see your bandages”, Ponov said. “We’ll see how you’re doing”.
After a brief inspection, he cleaned the wounds with Ik tree oil and wrapped them with clean bandages.
“You only have some small lacerations left, nothing major to be worried about. I’d still advise you to rest, before we check out this ship”.
“You don’t have to convince me, I’m going to sleep, don’t bother waking me up, when I do, we’ll take a stroll”.
