Topan yang kekuatannya masuk kategori lima, yang tertinggi untuk kategori topan, ini akan mencapai bagian utara Cooktown, pada Jumat (11/4) malam. Cooktown yang berjarak 1.600 kilometer dari Brisbane ini merupakan kota pinggir pantai dengan jumlah penududuk 2.400 jiwa.
"Apapun itu dengan kecepatan di atas 80 kilometer (per jam) tentu berbahaya," terang Wali Kota Cook Shire, Peter Scott kepada Australian Broadcasting Corp seperti dilansir AFP, Jumat (11/4/2014).
"Apapun dengan kecepatan di atas 80 kilometer (per jam) akan menerbangkan logam tipis ke arah Anda dan memotong kepala Anda, angin itu akan mampu mengangkat atap rumah Anda, angin itu juka akan memicu kerusakan parah sehingga lokasi terbaik yang bisa Anda tempati adalah tetap di dalam (rumah)," imbuhnya.
Scott menambahkan, seorang polisi senior setempat bahkan mengatakan: "Cooktown yang Anda lihat sekarang, tidak akan sama besok."
Topan Ita diperkirakan akan menerjang sejumlah wilayah Queensland mulai Jumat (11/4) malam. Premier Queensland Campbell Newman mengimbau warga untuk mengungsi dari rumah masing-masing ke tempat-tempat penampungan setempat.
"Mereka harus mulai mengungsi pagi ini. Saya mendorong warga yang mengungsi untuk memastikan mereka membawa serta seluruh barang pribadi yang penting: barang-barang seperti paspor, akta kelahiran," ucapnya.
"Mereka mulai mengisi daya telepon genggam mereka, mereka mulai mematikan peralatan, mereka juga membawa obat-obatan, makan dan air, dan memastikan mereka bisa menjaga diri sendiri selama beberapa hari di tempat yang menjadi pengungsian mereka," jelas Newman.
Wilayah Australia bagian timur laut memang tergolong biasa dilanda badai tropis. Namun Biro Meteorologi setempat menyebut topan Ita ini lebih kuat dari topan Yasi yang 3 tahun lalu meluluhlantakkan Queensland, merusak banyak rumah dan menghancurkan hasil panen.
"Pada dasarnya, ini merupakan topan yang sangat serius. Sangat padat, sistem yang sangat kuat," terang Andrew Tupper dari Biro Meteorologi setempat.
