事件起始于当地时间3月18日晚间18时，中国国民党立法委员张庆忠以30秒之快草率宣布完成 《海峡两岸服务贸易协议》的委员会审查，而引起一群就读大学与研究所的学生们反对，并在立法院外举行“守护民主之夜”晚会，抗议轻率的审查程序；之后有400多名学生趁着警员不备，而进入立法院内静坐抗议，接着于晚间21时突破警方的封锁线占领立法院议场。
占领议场事件发生后，在26个小时内便有以学生为主的1万多名民众，聚集在立法院外表达支持。参与占领立法院议场行动者，主要学生领导人为黑色岛国青年阵线（简称黑岛青）的成员，包括国立台湾大学政治研究所研究生林飞帆，国立清华大学社会研究所研究生陈为廷、魏扬、陈廷豪等人。外围的支持群众则由反黑箱服贸民主阵线、公民1985行动联盟与各个社会运动团体进行组织。
学生主张 《两岸服务贸易协议》 应“先立法、再审查” 并申明三项诉求
立法院本会期推动两岸协议监督条例立法。
在完成立法之前不得审查服贸。
立法院程序委员会不得继续阻挡“两岸协议监督条例法制化”的提案。
在议场遭到占领后，内政部警政署紧急调动警力前往立法院支援，抗议学生则陆续用立法委员的座椅堵住议场门口以防止遭到驱离；警方多次尝试清除议场内部的学生但没有成功，期间双方也因此发生肢体冲突并且有数人受伤。之后双方处于对峙态势，但记者与其他相关人士仍可绕道进入场内，外界也提供大量食物与衣物等民生物资以支持场内外的抗议者。3月23日晚间19时，另一群示威者冲至邻近的行政院大楼，破窗而入，24日零时起陆续遭警方强制驱离（323占领行政院事件）。
3月30日，继国会与内阁之后，抗议者发起了“占领凯道大游行”，号召全台民众至台北市凯达格兰大道（简称凯道）静坐、游行，以黑衫为标志，故称黑衫军。黑色岛国青年阵线估计，黑衫军群众超过50万人涌上凯道，警政署估算约有11.6万人参与，美联社则估计超过20万人。
这次事件是中华民国历史上，国会议场首次遭到公民占领。除了主流媒体的报道外，抗议学生与场外支持者们也透过影片分享网站等网络媒体自行转播现场实况。本次运动，为继1990年野百合学运后一最备受注目的学生运动，参加者高达数万人次。而核心领导人物的社运启蒙经验，皆来自于野草莓运动。
轶事
误会向日葵是中国的国花
2014年3月21日，一位台联地方服务人员误以为向日葵是中华人民共和国国花，并踩踏花朵泄愤。但事实上中华人民共和国政府并没有法定的国花，以向日葵为国花的国家为俄罗斯、乌克兰、葡萄牙、秘鲁、玻利维亚。在中华人民共和国，虽毛泽东时期有一些红卫兵组织以此花为标志，或有以向阳花（即向日葵）为主题的红色歌曲，但均和国花无关。
萧家淇控诉糕饼遭窃
2014年3月23日，晚间19时30分左右，示威群众不满马政府回应，爆发占领行政院事件，群众进入政院后曾搬动桌柜、拆除窗帘。行政院副秘书长萧家淇隔天检视状况后抱怨，自己要送给同仁的太阳饼、屏东知名起士蛋糕被偷吃，还有抽屉内的零钱也被偷。有人认为，社会运动爆发，而官员竟还在关切零食被示威群众偷窃一事。随后有人发起“甜点还给你，权力还给我”的网络购物行动；借此号召支持的网友团购太阳饼送“还”给萧家淇，甚至嘱咐说“让你吃个够”，但萧家淇表示他的用意是要告诉学生们这种偷窃行为是不恰当的，故拒绝接受这种物质赔偿，并建议网友将这些团购来的太阳饼转送弱势团体，但却被发起人邱先生揶揄调侃“可能是送错牌子了”。最后被退回的太阳饼一半送给弱势团体，而另一半分送给在立法院外参予向日葵运动的在场者，太阳饼业者则因为此事件意外带动了业绩。
邱毅误认向日葵为香蕉
2014年3月25日，前立委邱毅在中国大陆的中国中央电视台海峡两岸节目中拿着一张太阳花学运的照片说：“有的就地睡觉，然后吃得是满地的狼藉，请看这个就是立法机构的发言台，在立法机构的发言台上面，大家看到没有一大堆的香蕉，很明显的这个香蕉是谁送的，后来我查得很清楚，这个香蕉就是民进党的党团送进来的。”但实际上邱毅所指的【香蕉】是这次学运的精神象征【太阳花】，引起许多人的取笑。

In E-Sim we have a huge, living world, which is a mirror copy of the Earth. Well, maybe not completely mirrored, because the balance of power in this virtual world looks a bit different than in real life. In E-Sim, USA does not have to be a world superpower, It can be efficiently managed as a much smaller country that has entrepreneurial citizens that support it's foundation. Everything depends on the players themselves and how they decide to shape the political map of the game.
Work for the good of your country and see it rise to an empire.
Activities in this game are divided into several modules. First is the economy as a citizen in a country of your choice you must work to earn money, which you will get to spend for example, on food or purchase of weapons which are critical for your progress as a fighter. You will work in either private companies which are owned by players or government companies which are owned by the state. After progressing in the game you will finally get the opportunity to set up your own business and hire other players. If it prospers, we can even change it into a joint-stock company and enter the stock market and get even more money in this way.
In E-Sim, international wars are nothing out of the ordinary.
Become an influential politician.
The second module is a politics. Just like in real life politics in E-Sim are an extremely powerful tool that can be used for your own purposes. From time to time there are elections in the game in which you will not only vote, but also have the ability to run for the head of the party you're in. You can also apply for congress, where once elected you will be given the right to vote on laws proposed by your fellow congress members or your president and propose laws yourself. Voting on laws is important for your country as it can shape the lives of those around you. You can also try to become the head of a given party, and even take part in presidential elections and decide on the shape of the foreign policy of a given state (for example, who to declare war on). Career in politics is obviously not easy and in order to succeed in it, you have to have a good plan and compete for the votes of voters.
You can go bankrupt or become a rich man while playing the stock market.
The international war.
The last and probably the most important module is military. In E-Sim, countries are constantly fighting each other for control over territories which in return grant them access to more valuable raw materials. For this purpose, they form alliances, they fight international wars, but they also have to deal with, for example, uprisings in conquered countries or civil wars, which may explode on their territory. You can also take part in these clashes, although you are also given the opportunity to lead a life as a pacifist who focuses on other activities in the game (for example, running a successful newspaper or selling products).
