Essa espécie de tubarão é pouco conhecida, afinal o bicho vive em um habitat completamente remoto e isolado. O que se sabe por enquanto é que seu crescimento é lento: cerca de 1 centímetro ao ano – esse fator é o responsável pela alta expectativa de vida do animal.
Para estimar a idade desse tubarão-da-groenlândia, os pesquisadores analisaram os olhos de 28 desses animais, que morreram acidentalmente durante um monitoramento de peixes feito pelo Greenland Institute for Natural Resources.

Nielsen explica que o estudo teve mais sucesso porque a equipe de pesquisadores tinha tubarões de todas as idades e tamanhos, então foi possível fazer comparações fundamentais para que chegassem à conclusão quanto à idade média do animal.
A análise dos olhos é fundamental porque a estrutura ocular desses animais tem uma lente que cresce ao longo de toda a vida – o número de camadas na lente indica a idade do animal. Para fazer essa contagem, é preciso remover cada camada e chegar ao núcleo embrionário da lente, que é feito de proteínas formadas quando o tubarão era recém-nascido. A análise da composição química desse material dá a estimativa da idade.
Entre os 28 tubarões avaliados, a idade média ficou em 272 anos, sendo que o maior de todos, que media 5 metros de comprimento, tinha 392 anos. Um fato curioso sobre a idade desses gigantes é que eles atingem a maturidade sexual quando chegam aos 4 metros de comprimento, o que significa 156 anos de vida.
Longevidade
O motivo pelo qual vivem tantos anos? Possivelmente é o ambiente extremamente gelado, que desacelera a atividade metabólica e possibilita que o animal tenha menos danos na pele.
De acordo com Nielsen, essa é uma espécie que precisa ser bem estudada, já que não se sabe nem ao menos quantos desses tubarões ainda existem no mundo – além do mais, devido às mudanças climáticas, sua existência pode estar comprometida. “Se o tubarão-da-groenlândia vive por tanto tempo e não se reproduz até os 150 anos, sua população está vulnerável à exploração”, explicou Aaron Fisk, da Universidade de Windsor.
Nielsen afirma que pescadores que exploram a região devem ter o máximo de cuidado com esses animais. O mesmo vale para exploradores que buscam peixes, óleos e recursos naturais na região onde esses tubarões vivem. Respeitar quem está aqui há tanto tempo é o mínimo que podemos fazer.

Activities in this game are divided into several modules. First is the economy as a citizen in a country of your choice you must work to earn money, which you will get to spend for example, on food or purchase of weapons which are critical for your progress as a fighter. You will work in either private companies which are owned by players or government companies which are owned by the state. After progressing in the game you will finally get the opportunity to set up your own business and hire other players. If it prospers, we can even change it into a joint-stock company and enter the stock market and get even more money in this way.

The second module is a politics. Just like in real life politics in E-Sim are an extremely powerful tool that can be used for your own purposes. From time to time there are elections in the game in which you will not only vote, but also have the ability to run for the head of the party you're in. You can also apply for congress, where once elected you will be given the right to vote on laws proposed by your fellow congress members or your president and propose laws yourself. Voting on laws is important for your country as it can shape the lives of those around you. You can also try to become the head of a given party, and even take part in presidential elections and decide on the shape of the foreign policy of a given state (for example, who to declare war on). Career in politics is obviously not easy and in order to succeed in it, you have to have a good plan and compete for the votes of voters.

The international war.
The last and probably the most important module is military. In E-Sim, countries are constantly fighting each other for control over territories which in return grant them access to more valuable raw materials. For this purpose, they form alliances, they fight international wars, but they also have to deal with, for example, uprisings in conquered countries or civil wars, which may explode on their territory. You can also take part in these clashes, although you are also given the opportunity to lead a life as a pacifist who focuses on other activities in the game (for example, running a successful newspaper or selling products).
